In a re-examination of classical modernism, Matthias Bitzer combines portraits and geometrical constructions and often draws on the formal language, stories and intellectual-historical contexts of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He translates his characteristic sign language into various artistic media such as painting, sculptures, drawings, collages and spatial installations.
