Wilhelm Sasnal
Wilhelm Sasnal (born December 29, 1972 in Tarnów , Poland ) is a Polish painter , filmmaker and comic artist .
life and work
Wilhelm Sasnal studied architecture at the Technical University of Cracow (1992–1994) and then painting at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts . He graduated in 1999. From 1996 to 2001 he was active in the artists' association Grupa Ładnie in Krakow. Various presentations of his paintings outside Poland, especially in the Kunsthalle Basel and at the Basel art fair list , he helped around 2002 international breakthrough.
In his oil paintings, Sasnal uses images from private and public, cultural and political contexts, such as current press photographs and historical photographs (often from history books), sketches of everyday observations and family photos, comics and films. The picture elements are reproduced in a realistic way of painting. Topics that Sasnal frequently deals with are the Holocaust and the history of Poland since World War II .
Since 1997 films have been made in collaboration with his wife Anka Sasnal. Their joint film Z daleka widok jest piękny / It Looks Pretty from a Distance (2011) has been invited to various film festivals, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the International Film Festival Rotterdam . Her film Huba (Parasite) (2014, 66 min.) Was shown at the Berlinale 2014 in Berlin.
In 2006, Sasnal won the Vincent van Gogh Biennial Award for Contemporary Art in Europe . His international exhibitions include a. the Frankfurter Kunstverein (2006), the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf (2009), the Center for Contemporary Art in Málaga (2010), the London Whitechapel Gallery (2011), the Haus der Kunst Munich (2012).
