Power steering

Knob on a steering wheel of a forklift

Power steering is a common general name for an additionally attached handle knob on the steering wheel of motor vehicles . This is intended to enable increased safety of the steering if the steering wheel is only held with one hand when the other hand operates operating parts such as indicators, windshield wiper switches or light switches . The term power steering was previously used for today's power steering and is also used in the theoretical tests for driver tests.

Applications

A frequent use of this aid is on vehicles for disabled drivers. The latter is done for people who have little strength in the arm, hand or finger area, are paralyzed or whose limbs are amputated, and who (in Germany) have received a corresponding requirement from the driving license authorities to use such an aid. Away from public road traffic, it is often used on work vehicles such as forklifts , tractors , tractors and construction machinery .

Approval (Germany)

In Germany, the TÜV guidelines (as of 2008) stipulate that only people who have received a corresponding requirement may use this steering aid. This must therefore be folded away or removed if the vehicle is being driven by a person who is not physically disabled. After installation, the vehicle must be presented to an approved testing organization (e.g. TÜV, DEKRA, GTÜ). There is an expert opinion according to §21 StVZO after vehicle change (§19 Abs. 2 StVZO) created as an individual acceptance. The vehicle documents must then be supplemented accordingly with this report at the registration office . Fixed steering wheel knobs are no longer permitted.

Execution and registration in Rehadat's aids directory

Gripping and turning aids on the steering wheel for physically handicapped drivers can have more specific shape adaptations to the shape and size of the hand, for example as a fork holder with two or three prongs for the hand or the stump of the arm. The steering aid is detachably mounted on the steering wheel using a quick-release axle and bracket.

The Rehadat aids directory lists steering aids for motor vehicles under the following names and structures of EN ISO 9999 :

  • 12 - Aids for personal mobility
    • 12 12 - Vehicle adaptations
      • 12 12 07 Motor vehicle adaptations for operating the steering (approx. 30 products)

financing

Financial aid can be provided in Germany according to the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Aid Ordinance .
