ISO 9999

The EN ISO 9999 standard aids for people with disabilities - classification and terminology provides an overview of products that are used as aids for disabled people. As a result of the translation from English, this classification has its own terminology that differs from those of other classifications, e.g. B. the aids directory of the statutory health insurance .

The classification is continuously adapted to new technical developments and requirements. The publisher is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and its Technical Committee ISO / TC 173. The original ISO 9999 was converted by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) into a European Standard (EN) with the same number.

Technical aids (for disabled people) are defined in EN ISO 9999 as “products, devices, equipment or technical systems that are used by disabled people, be they custom-made or generally available, that prevent, compensate for, monitor damage, impairment of ability or impairment , facilitate or neutralize ”. They are often referred to as tools or assistive technology.

The classification of this standard is based on the respective function of the products. A six-digit "ISO number" with three hierarchical levels is assigned for each type of aid. For example 12 12 18: 12 aids for personal mobility 12 12 motor vehicle adaptations 12 12 18 lifting devices on motor vehicles for lifting people in wheelchairs into a motor vehicle

The following groups of aids are defined in the version of October 22, 2006 at the top level:

  • 04 Aids for personal medical treatment
  • 05 Tools for training skills
  • 06 Orthoses and prostheses
  • 09 Tools for personal care and safety
  • 12 tools for personal mobility
  • 15 household aids
  • 18 Furniture and aids for adapting apartments and buildings
  • 22 Tools for communication and information

A comprehensive overview of individual products according to this classification is provided by the Rehadat database of the Institute of German Economy in Cologne.
