Tri Yann is a French folk and folk rock group from Brittany . In addition to interpreting traditional Breton songs, she has also become known beyond France with her own pieces.

history

The band was founded in 1971 by Bernard Baudriller, Jean-Louis Jossic, Jean Chocun and Jean-Paul Corbineau. Since three of the members were called Jean (or Breton: Yann), they chose the original name Tri Yann an Naoned (German: "Three Yanns from Nantes"), which was then shortened to Tri Yann. Tri Yann now have eight musicians (as of 2016).

subjects

Along with Alan Stivell, Tri Yann are the best-known interpreters of Breton music in France. In addition to traditional themes, they also process contemporary and political content in the songs, for example in Le Soleil est Noir (1978), which deals with the effects of the oil spill on the Breton coast after the sinking of the Amoco Cadiz . The title Aloida on the 1995 album Portraits deals with the problem of honor killings among Muslim immigrants.

Most of the songs Tri Yann sing in French, which is also their mother tongue. Nevertheless, they see themselves as Bretons . And what this means for them, they explain in the piece La découverte ou l'ignorance : “Le breton est-il ma langue maternelle? / Non: je suis ne à Nantes où on ne le parle pas. (...) / Suis-je même breton? / Vraiment, je le crois et m'en expliquerai (...) ”(German:“ Is Breton my mother tongue? / No, I was born in Nantes, where it is not spoken. (...) / I am nevertheless Breton? / Truly, I think so, and I want to explain myself because of it (...) ")
