Jürgen Partenheimer

Jürgen Partenheimer (born May 14, 1947 in Munich ) is a German artist .

Life

Jürgen Partenheimer grew up in Lübeck and Munich. After attending the Icking secondary school, he began studying philosophy and art history in 1968 with Ernesto Grassi, Hermann Bauer and Wolfgang Braunfels at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1969 he crossed the Sahara and in 1970 a Columbus scholarship for Brandeis University , Massachusetts. However, Partenheimer chose the University of Arizona , Tucson, where he studied fine arts. In 1971 he made a trip to Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. Four travel sketchbooks were created, which were exhibited with the artist's books (Wienand Verlag, Cologne, 2004). In 1972 he received an invitation from the Spanish artist Fernando Zobel to Cuenca in connection with the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español, Cuenca, where he met the artists Gustavo Torner, Sempere, Gerardo Rueda and Eduardo Chillida . In 1973 he was invited to the Art Department of the University of Arizona as a teaching assistant and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Return to Munich, continuation of studies. In 1974 Partenheimer began a doctoral scholarship from the LMU, as well as a research grant from the Free State of Bavaria for the Museé d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He had a friendship with Carola Giedion-Welcker , who accompanied Constantin Brâncuși's dissertation on photography . In 1976 the doctorate to Dr. phil. at the LMU with Wolfgang Braunfels.

In 1974 Partenheimer married Annette Holzmann. In 1976 a daughter was born, in 1977 and 1979 the sons. He lives with his wife near Cologne.

At the end of the 1970s he moved to Düsseldorf, where he worked as a research assistant and curator at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf under Jürgen Harten , who later invited him to an exhibition in the Kunsthalle after he decided to leave the Kunsthalle in favor of unrestricted artistic work. In 1979 he had his first gallery exhibition at the Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh.

In 1980 he received a work grant from the BDI. After participating in the XI. At the Paris Biennale , he traveled to Ecuador and Colombia, climbing Chimborazzo in the footsteps of Alexander von Humboldt. In 1981 he received the Canada Council Grant for Foreign Visiting Artists for a guest stay in Montréal, lecture at Concordia University and exhibition at the Articule Gallery. In the same year he participated in the XVI. Biennale São Paulo in the section “Nucleus I” and was invited to an exhibition with a lecture in Amsterdam at the De Appel Foundation . In 1982 Partenheimer received the NEA Grant (National Endowment for the Arts), New York for an exhibition at Franklin Furnace, New York and the exhibition at Artists Space, New York. In Düsseldorf the award was made with the Great NRW Prize for Fine Arts. From 1983 to 1985 he worked as a "Visiting Artist" and "Distinguished Visisting Professor" at the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of California at Davis. Partenheimer exhibited in 1984 at Leo Castelli's Uptown Gallery in New York. While in New York he met Jasper Johns, whom he visited in his house in Upstate New York.

After returning to Germany with a solo exhibition in the Kunstraum München, he taught as a guest at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf from 1985 and took part in overview exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf , Kunstmuseum Bern and the Nationalgalerie Berlin (German Art 1945–1985). In 1986 he took part in the XLII Venice Biennale and was invited as artist in residence at the Glassel School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston , Texas . In 1987 he was invited to teach at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. He worked as an artist in residence at the Fine Arts Work Center, Provincetown, Massachusetts. In 1988 Partenheimer had a solo exhibition “Metamorphosis-Homecoming” in the National Gallery in Berlin and participation in the international exhibition “Signatures” in the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Ghent. In 1989 Rolf Wedewer showed the first retrospective of his drawings, which then went to the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf and the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen , Switzerland. The Fondacion Miró Barcelona showed his work at the first triennial of drawing.

In 1990 Werner Hofmann invited Partenheimer to an exhibition about his graphic work in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. In San Francisco in the Limestone Press the artist's book “Giant Wall” was created during an “artist in residence” invitation. It was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, New York and shown in the 1994 exhibition “A century of artists books” at the Museum of Modern Art , New York. In 1991 Jürgen Partenheimer wrote his poetic manifesto “De coloribus - An attempt on colors”, published by Art Book, Amsterdam and Limestone Press, San Francisco. Between 1991 and 1994 he taught at the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland, at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg and was a guest at ARTELEKU, San Sebastian. In 1993 he had an exhibition in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and the Städel Frankfurt under the title "Narrow Gates". In 1995 Partenheimer received the Madrid Art Critic's Prize for the best exhibition of the season. In 1996 he made his first trip to China. In 1997 he was a guest at the Institute for Research in Art, Graphic Studio, Tampa, Florida and then worked at Garner Tullis in New York on the series "Borderlines". In 1997 he had a solo exhibition of his work in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the sculpture “World Axis” will be displayed in the city's Vondelpark . In 1998 he made his second trip to China and opened his exhibition at the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern , which is also shown in the Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa. In 2000, he was the first German contemporary artist in China to receive a comprehensive retrospective in the national museums of Beijing and Nanking, which was accompanied by an extraordinary response in the media. His sculpture “World Axis” will be set up on the outskirts of the “Forbidden City”. In 2001 the first German-Chinese symposium on the cultural dialogue between the two countries took place at the Kunstmuseum Bonn on this occasion, including Xu Huping, director of the Nanking Museum. The sculpture “World Axis” was exhibited for one year in the courtyard of the Gemeente Museum The Hague. In 2002, Jan Hoet invited Partenheimer to an extensive presentation of his work in the SMAK Museum in Ghent, where at the same time he published a book as "artist in residence" with the Ergo Pers publishing house. The group of works “Roman Diary”, 34 works on paper, was shown in 2004 in a solo exhibition by the artist at the Museum Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. In Gent, Ergo Pers, in collaboration with Cees Nooteboom, produced a book for an exhibition of artist's books in the Sinclair Haus, Bad Homburg. In 2004 Jürgen Partenheimer was awarded the Fine Arts Prize of the Dortmund Cultural Foundation. Federal President Rau honored him with the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, for the outstanding individuality of the work and his personal commitment to international cultural dialogues. In the same year he was invited to the 8th Philosophicum in Lech in Austria as a speaker. In 2005 he was a guest at the Copan, Oskar Niemeyer's most famous residential architecture in São Paulo, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut São Paulo, the Museum Pinacoteca Do Estado and the organization EXO experimental. In 2006 Richter Verlag Düsseldorf published an extensive book on the series of drawings “Römisches Tagebuch” and “Diario paulistano” on the occasion of an exhibition at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe and the Pinakothek in São Paulo. In the same year Chris Dercon and Jürgen Partenheimer spoke at a public event at the Haus der Kunst in Munich about the group of works “Das Sao Paulo Diary”, about which the actress Anna Böger from the ensemble of the Kammerspiele in Munich reads texts by Jürgen Partenheimer. Partenheimer was a guest at the Nietzsche House in Sils-Maria for a work stay, during which a new cycle of works on paper was created, which was shown there in 2007 with selected drawings from the “Roman Diary” and the “Diario paulistano”.

In 2008, the IKON Gallery in Birmingham organized a comprehensive exhibition of Jürgen Partenheimer's works, which was accompanied by an “off site” project in Birmingham's “Perrott's Folly”. The exhibition will later be taken over by the Kunstmuseum Bonn in a modified form. From 2009 to 2001, spatial exhibitions for the Chasa Jaura Museum in Switzerland, the Kunsthalle zu Kiel and the Mies van der Rohe House in Berlin follow. In 2011 Partenheimer received the NIROX Residency Award for a stay of several months in South Africa, accompanied by an exhibition in the Nirox Project Space in Johannesburg and an artist book, "Seeds and Tracks & Folded Spirits", published by David Krut Projects, Johannesburg / New York. In connection with the “Schaustelle” project of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, a room installation was created for 2013 for the Museum Mobile in Ingolstadt. In 2014 Partenheimer received the renowned Audain Distinguished Residency Award from the Emily Carr University for Art + Design in Vancouver. In the same year extensive overview exhibitions open under the title “Das Archiv-The Archive” in the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; the Deichtorhallen collection Falckenberg, Hamburg; the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver. Partenheimer lives and works in Munich and Italy.
