Garner Tullis

Garner Handy Tullis (born 1939 in Cincinnati, Ohio ) is an American artist. He has lived and worked in Pietrarubbia , Italy since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks .

biography

Garner Tullis is one of three children from the marriage of the industrialist Richard Barcley Tullis (1913–1999) and the painter Chaillé Handy, daughter of the swimmer and film pioneer Henry Jamison Handy . His parents are the founders of the Principal Viola Chair of the Cleveland Orchestra , which Robert Vernon currently holds. Garner Tullis has two siblings, Sarah ("Sallie") and Richard Barcley Jr.

After attending Principia College , Tullis first studied at the University of Pennsylvania , where he graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts and a year later with a Bachelor of Fine Arts . Thanks to several scholarships from the Fulbright program , he was able to continue his studies in Florence and travel through Europe. He then continued his studies at Stanford University , where he obtained a Master of Arts degree in 1967 . In 1972 he founded the International Institute of Experimental Printmaking , where he worked with well-known artists. His son Richard (* 1962), also a graphic artist, also learned here at a young age.

Tullis taught at Bennington College , California State University, Stanislaus , the University of California, Berkeley, and Davis , as well as Harvard University . His works belong to renowned collections, for example those of the Cleveland Museum of Art , the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art .
