Douglas Point was Canada's first commercially operated nuclear power plant and Canada's second CANDU reactor . The power plant with a gross electrical output of 218 MW is located near Kincardine, Ontario and was in operation from September 26, 1968 to May 4, 1984.

After the successful operation of the Nuclear Power Demonstrator as a demonstration reactor, which is considered to be the first reactor of the CANDU series and was intended to prove the feasibility of this concept, the decision was announced in 1959 to provide Canada's first commercially operated nuclear power plant with an advanced prototype of the CANDU reactor to build. The reactor went critical for the first time on November 15, 1966 at 4:26 p.m. local time . The network synchronization took place on January 7, 1967 commercial operation began on 26 September 1968th

In the early days in particular, there were problems with the reactor loading machines and insufficient valves in the reactor's primary circuit, which was filled with heavy water. Due to the experience gained in this way, many of these problems could be avoided during the subsequent construction of the CANDU units of the Pickering A nuclear power plant .

On May 4, 1984, 17 years after commissioning, the reactor was finally shut down because the owner Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. did not consider the necessary general overhaul of the reactor to be profitable enough due to the low output compared to the CANDU units, which were newer at the time.
