The Pickering nuclear power plant in Pickering , Ontario , with 8 CANDU reactors and an output power of 4,124  MW, is the second largest nuclear power plant in Canada after the Bruce nuclear power plant.

The power plant was built between 1966 and 1986 in several construction phases by the Canadian state company Ontario Hydro. In April 1999, the company was split into five parts, creating the energy company Ontario Power Generation (OPG). The newly founded company continues to operate the nuclear power plant.

business

In 1994, reactor 7 of the nuclear power plant set the world record for uninterrupted operation (894 days without shutdown).

Units A-1 and A-4 had been in a long-term shutdown and were put back into operation. Unit A-1 was put back into operation on September 26, 2005.

Due to the demand for electricity, it was decided to renew the two decommissioned reactors 2 and 3 again. For a long time, these have not been back in operation, according to reports from the nuclear safety authority. In January 2013, the two units were shut down retrospectively to May 28, 2007 (Unit 2) and October 31, 2008, respectively.

The operator plans to shut down units A-1 and A-4 in 2022 and the remaining reactors in 2024.
