The Nuclear Power Demonstration ( Engl. And Nuclear Power Demonstration ) was Canada's first to produce electrical energy unused nuclear reactor , while an early prototype for reactors of the CANDU series . Canadian General Electric, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. as well as Ontario Hydro. The power plant located in Rolphton, Ontario consisted of a heavy water moderated pressure tube reactor with a gross electrical output of 25 MW.

The reactor became critical for the first time on April 11, 1962 , and network synchronization took place on June 4, 1962. On October 1 of the same year, the reactor went into commercial operation.

The nuclear power plant was able to supply around 10,000 households with electricity. Far more important than the generation of electrical energy, however, was the role of the reactor as a demonstration reactor and prototype for the following CANDU reactors. It also served the engineers as a test facility for new types of fuel elements , materials and power plant components. The reactor was also used as a training reactor for the operators of later CANDU reactors.

Like all subsequent reactors of the CANDU series, the cooling and moderation of the reactor was carried out with heavy water . Even with this first prototype, the fuel element could be changed during ongoing operation.

The Rolphton nuclear power plant was finally shut down on August 1, 1987, long after much more powerful CANDU reactors were in operation. Since 2006 the entire fissile inventory has been removed and the facilities in the non-nuclear area dismantled.
