MPXpress is a series of diesel-electric passenger train locomotives designed for local traffic . The manufacturer Motive Power, Inc. offers the locomotives with different options such as different main engines and drive engines, power generation via a separate auxiliary engine or the main engine and new or revised bogies . MPI currently offers three main variants: MP36PH-3S , MP36PH-3C , and MP40PH-3C .

The MPXpress locomotives were the first mass-produced passenger train locomotives to meet the EPA Tier 1 and Tier 2 emissions regulations as well as the safety regulations of the FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) with regard to crash behavior and fire safety. The series also meets the crash standards of the APTA ( American Public Transportation Association ).

Various local transport companies in Canada and the USA have ordered MPXpress locomotives for their local transport networks.

The MBTA from Boston has now ordered the new HSP46 locomotive model from Motive Power for delivery from 2012. The HSP46 should meet the EPA Tier 3 emissions regulations.

Models

MP36PH-3S

The MP36PH-3S as the main motor has a 16 cylinder - diesel engine of the type MPI 645F3B. The generator for supplying the train busbar is connected directly to the main motor (hence the "S" for static in the type designation). When providing full electrical power for the connected passenger cars , the main engine must run at a higher speed in order to supply the passenger cars. When the full power of 500 kW is provided on the train busbar, the pulling force is only 2200 kW, since the power generation branches off power from the main engine.

Chicago 's Metra put 27 of these locomotives into service between 2003 and 2004. 14 of them replaced older EMD F40C locomotives, while the rest added to the fleet. When the locomotives were shipped they exhibited software and computer problems, to the point that Metra had to put two F40C back into service for a brief period in 2004. One of the unique features of the MP36 in the Metra fleet compared to other operators is the fact that it is equipped with a Gyralite (circling warning light) that is attached where the train number plate would otherwise be attached. Metra is currently the sole operator of the MP36PH-3S.

MP36PH-3C

The MP36PH-3C has the same main engine as the "3S" model, the MPI 645F3B diesel engine, but the generator for the train busbar is powered by its own Caterpillar C-18 diesel engine. Hence the "C" in the type designation. In this configuration, the entire power of the main motor of 2700 kW is available for the drive and this can go into idling if required. Caltrain was the first rail company to purchase the MP36PH-3C in 2003.

The version of SunRail will differ significantly from the standard versions. The modernized locomotives will have the same driver's cab as the other locomotives, but behind them a narrow locomotive body with external catwalks, as is common on many American locomotive models.

MP40PH-3C

GO Transit MP40PH-3C.

The MP40PH-3C is the same as the MP36PH-3C except for the following differences:

  • the MP40PH-3C uses a 16-cylinder EMD 710 GB diesel engine instead of the MPI 645F3B, which produces 3000 kW instead of 2700 kW.
  • the use of EMD's EM2000 control system instead of Wabtec / MPI's own system as in the MP36.
  • the installation of alternators and drive motors from EMD.

GO Transit has ordered 27 locomotives of this model, which were delivered between 2007 and 2008. An order for a further 20 units was signed in July 2008. These are currently being delivered. Another order for 10 additional units was placed in February 2010. In March 2011, GO Transit received a financing commitment for a further 20 units. Including all options, your fleet will include up to 77 locomotives of this model.

On November 1, 2011, it was announced that GO Transit would replace the EMD drive motors in 11 MP40 with new Cummins QSK95 motors . It is currently unclear whether the engine replacement program will also be extended to the remaining locomotives, which are still relatively new.

While GO Transit is currently the only operator of this locomotive model, Sound Transit has placed an order for three locomotives for use on its Sounder local transport line.

MP32PH-Q

An MPI MP32PH-Q locomotive in SunRail livery in September 2013.

The MP32PH-Q was manufactured for SunRail to the same specifications as new MPXpress locomotives, even though they are used GP40WH-2 locomotives . that were previously used at MARC . While the engines were overhauled inside the locomotives and the electronics were replaced with the new machines, the locomotives kept the narrow structure of the GP-40 on the outside, which was supplemented with an MPXpress driver's cab.

MP54AC

The MP54AC (also known as the MP40PHTC-T4) is the newest locomotive in the MPXpress family and the only model for sale in the United States. It meets the EPA's stringent Tier 4 emissions standards. The MP54AC uses a pair of Cummins 16-cylinder QSK60 engines with an output of 2,700 hp each, for a total of 5,400 hp or 4,000 kW, which makes it the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive for passenger trains in North America today. In times of low power demand, the locomotive can be operated with just one engine to reduce noise pollution and increase fuel efficiency.

The MP54AC competes with the EMD F125 and the Siemens Charger .

Existing MPXpress locomotives can be converted to the MP54AC.

The first prototype of an MP54AC was created by converting an MP40PH-3C from GO Transit. MotivePower removed the EMD motor and the HEP motor and replaced them with the two Cummins motors. Extensive modifications have been made to the locomotive body to accommodate additional air inlets and exhausts.

Initially, GO Transit wanted to convert a total of ten MP40PH-3Cs to the new MP54AC standard. The company later ordered 16 more, newly built MP54AC locomotives and expanded the order for converted units to a total of 26 units. The MP54ACs are also designed to replace the remaining F59PH locomotives that are still in service.
