The American Public Transportation Association , regularly abbreviated to APTA , is the non-profit interest group in the United States for the promotion of public transportation . He represents the interests of over 1,500 transport companies (as of 2016), from small bus operators to the large transport associations in the metropolitan regions , to the United States Congress .

The association was founded in 1882 as the American Street Railway Association (American Association of Tram Companies). The association renamed itself several times, from 1905 the American Street and Interurban Railway Association , from 1910 the American Electric Railway Association , from 1932 the American Transit Association and then from 1974 the American Public Transit Association (American Public Transport Association), which is already the well-known abbreviation APTA was born. The renaming to the name used today took place on January 1, 2000, preserving the abbreviation.

The APTA played an important role in the reorganization after the bankruptcies in rail traffic around 1970, as a result of which state rescue companies were founded - the Amtrak in 1971 for passenger traffic and Conrail in 1976 for freight traffic. The APTA represented the already subsidized local transport companies in the urban regions, and contributed to the consolidation of passenger transport. Substantial parts of the laws and regulations of the Urban Mass Transportation Administration , founded in 1964, are based on their decision proposals. In particular, the standardization by the UMTA, which was pending at the time of the founding, especially visible in the light rail trams , required a strong interest group in Washington. With the renaissance of the tram and the low-floor technology , the importance changed, the APTA still had an influence on the FAST ACT decision to subsidize passenger transport in 2015, but also has to cope with the decision to leave the New York MTA on April 8, 2016 ( the largest transport association worldwide).
