The German Down Sports Festival has been a sporting event for people with Down syndrome (trisomy 21), which has been taking place since 2003 , at which several 100 participants from the age of four can compete in competitive sports . There is an annual festival in Frankfurt am Main ; From 2005 to 2011 it also took place in Magdeburg in September .

The Down Sports Festival is organized by the Hexal Foundation gGmbH, which has been providing information about Down syndrome as part of the Germany-wide campaign "We belong to it", which has been running since 2000, and which advocates more tolerance in dealing with people with trisomy 21. The first German Down Sportsman Festival took place on June 14, 2003 in Frankfurt am Main, the second on May 8, 2004 also in Frankfurt am Main. The godparents at the time were Joachim Luger and Bobby Brederlow . On June 4, 2005, Frankfurt am Main was again the venue with the godparents Henning Baum and Bobby Brederlow, and on September 24, 2005, Magdeburg for the first time with Joachim Luger, Fabian Kelly and Bobby Brederlow. The fourth festival - calculated by age group - was on May 13, 2006 in Frankfurt (again sponsors were Joachim Luger, Fabian Kelly and Bobby Brederlow) and on September 30, 2006 in Magdeburg. The fifth sports festival took place on May 31, 2007 in Frankfurt and on September 21, 2007 in Magdeburg. One of the guests of honor in Magdeburg was Joachim Luger. From 2008 to 2010, Down sports festivals also took place in Frankfurt am Main and Magdeburg. In 2009 there was an official song for the sports festival for the first time, with the title: Your day .

The ninth German Down Sports Festival 2011 began on May 21, 2011 in Frankfurt am Main and continued on September 17, 2011 in Magdeburg. In May 2012, 2013 and 2014 the festival took place again in Frankfurt am Main.

On April 25, 2015, the athletes met in Frankfurt for the 13th German Down Sports Festival, the 14th festival took place on June 4, 2016, the 15th festival on May 20, 2017, as in previous years in Frankfurt am Main. Further festivals took place on April 28, 2018 and April 27, 2019.

procedure

The festival begins with the greeting and a ceremonial march into the hall. Different disciplines are offered such as 50-meter run, 100-meter run, lap running, table tennis, long throw , target throw , long jump , football and tennis . In 2009 a 1000 meter run was held for the first time. Athletes can register for a maximum of three disciplines.

The festival reaches its climax when at the end of the day the fashion show workshop (with Peyman Amin ), the dance workshop and the musical workshop show what the children have rehearsed during the event.

At the end of the festival, all participants, regardless of age and performance, will be presented with a gold medal.
