Matt Leyden Trophy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Matt Leyden Trophy is an ice hockey trophy of the Canadian Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and is awarded annually to the best coach of the OHL. It is named after Matt Leyden , president of the Ontario Hockey Association , and has been awarded since 1972.

The best coach of each year is chosen by the OHL franchises . In a first ballot, the teams vote for the best three coaches in their respective conference , whereby a coach receives 5 points for a first-place vote, 3 points for the second and 1 point for the third. The three coaches with the highest points at both conferences then reach the second ballot, in which the same procedure is followed. The award will be given to whoever has the most voting points out of the remaining six. It should be noted that when voting, no team can vote for its own coach. The most frequent title holder of the Matt Leyden Trophy is Brian Kilrea with five, followed by Dale Hunter with three awards.

In addition, the respective winner takes part in the election for the Brian Kilrea Coach of the Year Award , where he competes against the honored colleagues of the Western Hockey League and the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec .

It is not to be confused with the Leyden Trophy , which is awarded to the best team in the East Division of the OHL.
