Cameron D. Russell (born January 12, 1969 in Halifax , Nova Scotia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach and current official who played 440 games for the Chicago Blackhawks and Colorado Avalanche between 1985 and 1999 has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Since 2000, Russell has worked in various positions for the Halifax Mooseheads from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec .

Career

Russell spent his junior years between 1985 and 1989 at the Olympiques de Hull in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . During this time, the defender won the Coupe du Président in 1986 and 1988 with the team that he was captain in his final junior year. In the previous two years he had already served as assistant captain and was selected in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft in the third round in 50th position by the Chicago Blackhawks from the National Hockey League .

After Russell for 1989/90 season the franchise had joined the Chicago Blackhawks, he did initially difficult to make a breakthrough in the NHL. In his first three years in the professional field, the defender always shuttled between the NHL squad and that of the farm team , the Indianapolis Ice from the International Hockey League . He played most of the games for Indianapolis, while Chicago only had 41 missions during this period. It was not until the beginning of the 1992/93 season that Russell managed to establish himself in the NHL. The defensive player was in the following six years an integral part of the Blackhawks defense, where he was plagued by injuries due to his physical style of play. Due to the small number of missions in the two previous years Russell was given shortly after the beginning of the 1998/99 season in exchange for the Czech Roman Vopat and a six- round vote in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft to the Colorado Avalanche . There he played only 35 games between mid-November 1998 and mid-February 1999, as he had to end his career immediately and during the current season due to an injury to the muscle-tendon cap of the upper arm .

With the beginning of the 2000/01 season , Russell worked as an assistant coach of the Halifax Mooseheads in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec. He initially worked in this position for three years with the junior team from his hometown; from 2004 to 2006 then as a consultant. From the 2006/07 season , Russell acted as the team's head coach, and from 2008 he also became the general manager of the franchise. He filled this double function into the 2010/11 season before he handed over the coaching post to Bobby Smith . Since then, he has only been entrusted with the post of General Manager, whose double win in the 2012/13 season from Coupe du Président and Memorial Cup he played a major role.
