Jean-François Fortin (born March 15, 1979 in Laval , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who last played for the EC VSV in the Austrian ice hockey league .
Career
Fortin began his career in 1995 with the Sherbrooke Faucons in the Canadian Junior League QMJHL , where he was part of the regular squad and was able to improve continuously in the following years. Already in his second year with the Faucons, the defender increased his points yield to 37 scorer points in 59 games, so that some talent scouts from the NHL became aware and he finally in the NHL Entry Draft 1997 in the second round in a total of 35th position from the Washington Capitals was selected. Fortin then stayed in the QMJHL for two years and moved to the American Hockey League for the Portland Pirates , the then farm team of the Washington Capitals , for the 1999/00 season . His last season in the Canadian Junior League with the Sherbrooke Faucons was also his best, as the right-shooter was able to score 68 points in 76 games.
His first year in the AHL was quite successful for the Canadian. Although he did not initially get the chance to prove himself with the Capitals in the NHL, Fortin was able to fight for a regular place with the Pirates. After another year, which he spent completely in the minor league , the defender was in the roster of the Washington Capitals for the first time during the 2001/02 season . In the end, Fortin was used 36 times, scoring four points. In the following three years, the Canadian played predominantly in the AHL and was rarely used in the NHL. In total, he wore the Capitals jersey only 71 times. After those in charge of the capital city agreed on a cooperation with the Hershey Bears for the 2005/06 season , Fortin also ran for the Bears in the following period. In the very first season he was able to win the Calder Cup with the team after the team was able to defeat the Milwaukee Admirals in the play-off final .
Since a renewed permanent engagement in the NHL seemed unlikely for Fortin, the Canadian signed a contract with the Füchse Duisburg from the German ice hockey league for the 2006/07 season . The defender was able to convince with the foxes and moved to the 2007/08 season within the league to the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg , who initially provided him with a one-year contract. In Wolfsburg , the Canadian was part of the regular squad and was one of the top performers in the team. In 2008 Fortin decided against a contract extension with the Grizzly Adams and instead accepted a more lucrative offer from the Russian club HK MWD Balaschicha , with which he was henceforth active in the newly founded KHL . After a few months and only four stakes, he left the club for personal reasons and returned to the DEL, where he received a contract with the Krefeld Penguins .
After the 2008/09 season he ended his career first. On November 23, 2009, however, he signed a contract with the Austrian first division club EC VSV until the end of the season. At the beginning of March 2010, he finally ended his career.
