Jakub Kindl (born February 10, 1987 in Šumperk , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey defender who has been under contract with the Kölner Haien in the German Ice Hockey League since July 2019 .

Career

Jakub Kindl began his career in 2001 with the U18 juniors of HC Pardubice and soon played in the team in the older U20 group. He spent three years in the two youth teams and also made his debut in the professional squad in the Extraliga at the age of 16 , but one game remained with the seniors.

In 2004, at the age of 17, he moved to North America in the Canadian Junior League OHL , where he played for the Kitchener Rangers . He established himself with a solid debut season in the squad of Rangers, who moved in the playoffs to the final of the Western Conference, but there were defeated by the London Knights . Kindl was then selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft in 19th position.

In the 2005/06 season Kindl was able to improve significantly and was one of the leading players in the Rangers. He developed into one of the best defenders in the league, scoring twelve goals and 46 assists in 60 league games. However, his team failed in the playoffs in the first round. Kindl was shortly after leaving the squad the Grand Rapids Griffins , the AHL - farm team of the Detroit Red Wings called, and there should make his debut in the senior. He was able to prepare a goal in his first of three games.

For the 2006/07 season he returned to the OHL, where he was able to build on the good performance of the previous season and scored 55 points in 54 games. Also in the playoffs he was one of the best players in the Rangers, but they did not get beyond the second round. Kindl was then brought back to the Griffins squad for the AHL playoffs and was on the ice at each of the seven first round games. The series was lost 3: 4.

From the 2007/08 season Kindl had a permanent place in the squad of the Grand Rapids Griffins and had a solid start with 13 points in the first 42 games, but weakened in the second half of the season when he only came up with four assists. He also had the worst plus / minus value in the entire AHL. The following year he was initially much improved and he made the leap among the best defenders in the league. Defensively, he was much more stable and was able to surpass his points yield from the previous season in the 30th game of the season. The fans then voted him into the starting grid of the PlanetUSA All-Star Team for the All-Star Game of the AHL . But as in his debut season, he was unable to continue his good form in the second half of the season. Before the All-Star Game, he was a reliable figure in the Griffins' superior number game, but afterwards he only made three assists in the following 17 games.

After more than ten years in the organization of the Red Wings, Kindl was handed over to the Florida Panthers in February 2016 , who in return sent six- round voting rights for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft to Detroit. After the 2016/17 season, the Czech did not get a new contract in Florida, so he had been looking for a new employer since July 2017. He found this in October 2017 in HC Plzeň 1929 .

In July 2019, Kindl signed a contract with the Kölner Haien from the DEL .
