Maurice John "Maury" Edwards (born March 16, 1987 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who is under contract with the Cologne Sharks .
Career
Maury Edwards grew up in Rocky Rapids , a hamlet in central Alberta . After graduating from Frank Maddock High School in 2005, the then 18-year-old decided to focus on an ice hockey career. So he moved to Port Alberni , British Columbia to play for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in the British Columbia Hockey League . Edwards completed two seasons there and took part in the World Junior A Challenge in 2006 , where he won the gold medal with Canada West , including in a team with the late NHL players Justin Fontaine and Kyle Turris . The Canadian then decided to study economics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell , for whose ice hockey team, the Riverhawks , he was parallel in the National Collegiate Athletic Association on the ice.
After completing his four-year studies, Edwards tried to gain a foothold as a professional and signed try-out contracts with the Providence Bruins and Lake Erie Monsters , but could not recommend himself for a long-term commitment in the AHL . He then signed a contract with the Cincinnati Cyclones from the lower class ECHL in September 2011 . Here, too, the defender could not draw attention to himself, a firm contract offer from an AHL or NHL club did not materialize. Instead, the defender was given to the Florida Everblades in a player swap .
It was followed by the move to Europe, where Edwards in his first season with the ESV Kaufbeuren relegation from the DEL2 in the league could prevent just barely. In a weak Kaufbeurer team, Edwards stood out, so that the league rival Ravensburg Towerstars signed the Canadian in April 2014. He was able to repeat his strong performances from the previous season, after which he was elected defender of the year in the DEL2.
On March 26, 2015, the Straubing Tigers from the DEL announced the commitment of the right-shooter. After three years in Lower Bavaria, Edwards will move to ERC Ingolstadt within the league for the 2018/19 season . He finished his two seasons with the Panthers as the defender with the highest points in the DEL main round (38 and 46 scorer points), was elected Defender of the Year in 2019/20 and then moved to the Kölner Haien .
Style of play
Maury Edwards is considered to be a strong runner. Thanks to his hard and well-placed shot, he is often used in power play . The right-handed shooter feels more comfortable on the large ice rink, and particularly in the NCAA and DEL2 , he proved his goal hazard.
