Mattias Ritola (born March 14, 1987 in Borlänge ) is a Swedish ice hockey striker who has been playing at Leksands IF in the Elitserien again since January 2017 .
Career
Mattias Ritola began his career in the Swedish third division in 2002, where he collected 20 points in 27 games for the senior team of his home club Borlänge HF . After a year he moved to Västra Frölunda HC , for whose U18 and U20 teams he went on the ice and showed convincing performances before moving to Leksands IF during the 2004/05 season. In the spring of 2005, the Swedish national team took part in the U18 Junior World Championship , where they won the bronze medal. The Detroit Red Wings then selected him in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round at position 103.
In addition to 14 missions for the youth team Leksands, he played in the 2005/06 season, mainly for the professionals of the association in the Elitserien , where he met with only three assists, but could not convince in 30 games and the team at the end of the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan descent . In the 2006/07 season, Ritola, whose strengths are mainly on the offensive, played at Leksands mostly in the defensive fourth row of attacks, but did not show the desired performance and was transferred to the Swedish third division during the season, where he played again for his home club Borlänge HF.
After the season in Sweden had ended in spring 2007, Ritola signed a trial contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings from the AHL , with whom he trained for the next few weeks but was not used. For the 2007/08 season he was then part of the Rapids squad. Ritola changed his game a little and concentrated more on the defensive, which was his weak point so far, and led the team in the plus / minus rating. When the Detroit Red Wings missed a total of four strikers in March 2008 due to injuries and illness, Ritola was called up one day after his 21st birthday in the NHL squad and made his debut against the Nashville Predators . In the 2008/09 season , Ritola showed a clear improvement, especially on the offensive. Even in the first half of the season he exceeded his points yield of the debut season of 22 scorer points and demonstrated constant performance over the entire season, which made him a support in the attacking and defensive game of the Griffins. In October 2010 he was removed from the squad by the Detroit Red Wings and then committed by the Tampa Bay Lightning .
After starting the 2011/12 season at the Tampa Bay Lightning and playing five NHL games, he moved back to the Swedish Elitserien in November 2011 and signed a working paper at MODO Hockey . Ritola was able to convince there and received a three-year contract extension in January 2013, but moved to Leksands IF within the league in October 2014 . In April 2015, the Swede joined league rivals Skellefteå AIK .
He moved to Friborg-Gottéron in the National League A for the 2016/17 season and left the club in January 2017 for personal reasons. Shortly after leaving Friborg, Ritola was announced as a new addition to Leksands IF - he had already played for the club as a youth.
