Ryan Stoa (born April 13, 1987 in Bloomington , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with Örebro HK in the Svenska Hockeyligan since July 2019 .
Career
Ryan Stoa was selected in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round at 34th position and then played four years for the University of Minnesota in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . On March 27, 2009 the striker signed his first professional contract.
At the beginning of the 2009/10 season , despite good performance in training camp, he was sent to the Avalanche farm team, the Lake Erie Monsters , in the American Hockey League . Stoa made his debut in the NHL on December 13, 2009 against the Calgary Flames , his first NHL goal he scored on April 9, 2010 against the Chicago Blackhawks . The following season Stoa began with the Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL, before he was called back to the NHL squad of the Colorado Avalanche in January 2011 after good performance.
In July 2012, Stoa signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals as a free agent . After a total of two years in Washington, Stoa switched to the Russian KHL representative Metallurg Novokuznetsk in July 2014 . In his first KHL season he scored 15 goals and assists in 60 games. In February 2015 he received a contract extension for one year. In November 2015 it was handed over to Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk in exchange for compensation .
After the 2015/16 season he did not receive a new contract with Neftechimik and therefore moved to HK Spartak Moscow , for which he completed 114 KHL games in the following two years. After his contract expired, he was hired by HK Tractor Chelyabinsk in May 2018 .
International
Ryan Stoa played for the US national ice hockey team at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2005 and won the gold medal, and two years later he and his team won the bronze medal at the U20 Junior World Championship.
In November 2015 he took part in the Germany Cup with the national team. He then represented his home country at the 2018 Winter Olympics , where he finished seventh with the team that competed without an NHL player.
