The Apostolic Vicariate of Tripoli ( lat. : Apostolicus Vicariatus Tripolitanus ) is in Libya situated Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate with headquarters in Tripoli .
history
Pope Urban VIII founded the Apostolic Prefecture Tripoli in 1630 from the cession of territory by the Diocese of Las Palmas ( ecclesiastical province of Valencia ). In 1894 she was promoted to the Apostolic Vicariate of Libya .
On February 3, 1927, it lost part of its territory to the Apostolic Vicariate Cyrenaica and at the same time took the name, Apostolic Vicariate Tripolitana. On June 22, 1939, it lost part of its territory in favor of the establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture of Misrata and at the same time it received its current name.
Only one Catholic church is currently open in its territory, namely St. Francis in Tripoli. Like the Church of Maria Immacolata in Benghazi, the church is maintained by the Franciscan community of St. Paul the Apostle (Malta). The Catholic Cathedral of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Tripoli, inaugurated in 1928, has been used as the Gamal Abdel Nasser Mosque since 1970 after the expropriation .
