Gamal Abdel Nasser Mosque (Tripoli)

The Gamal Abdel Nasser Mosque on Algeria Square ( Maidan al-Dschazāʾir ) in Tripoli was built as a Catholic cathedral with the name Santa Maria degli Angeli in Libya during the Italian colonial period in Libya . The neo-Romanesque church building, built from 1923 to 1928 according to plans by Saffo Panteri , was converted into a mosque named after Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1970 as a testimony to Italian colonialism by the Libyan revolutionary regime , and the campanile turned into a minaret .
