Career
Gary Nylund was born in Surrey and played in his youth for the Delta Suns in the neighboring Delta . In the 1978/79 season he moved to the Portland Winter Hawks in the Western Hockey League (WHL), the highest-ranking junior league in the region. There he increased his personal statistics from year to year until he got 66 scorer points in 65 games in the 1981/82 season and was honored with the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the best defender in the league as well as in the WHL First All-Star Team was called. In addition, he won the WHL playoffs for the President's Cup with the Winter Hawks that year , while the team failed in the subsequent Memorial Cup in the group stage. Still, the defender was chosen to join the tournament's all-star team. After this successful season he was selected third in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs .
The demands of this high draft position was not met Nylund in the sequence, among other things due to a knee injury, as a result of which he missed large parts of his first two seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He then spent two more years in Toronto before his expiring contract was not renewed at the end of the 1985/86 season. As a result, he joined the Chicago Blackhawks in August 1986 , in which he reached his personal career best in the following season 1986/87 with 27 points and in the season 1987/88 with his always physically emphasized style of play collected over 200 penalty minutes. After a little more than two years, the Blackhawks gave it to the New York Islanders along with Marc Bergevin in November 1988 and in return received Steve Konroyd and Bob Bassen .
With the Islanders Nylund was regularly active until 1991, before another injury left him sidelined for almost the entire 1991/92 season. After another 22 games for New York and a handful of games for their farm team , the Capital District Islanders from the American Hockey League , he ended his career after the 1992/93 season. In total, he had played 632 NHL games and recorded 177 points and 1298 penalty minutes. After his active career, the Canadian returned to his homeland and has been working as a firefighter there ever since. In addition, he was several times between 2010 and 2016 as assistant coach for the Surrey Eagles , a local junior team, behind the gang, but did not pursue this career further.
International
During his final season with the Portland Winter Hawks, Nylund was called up to the Canadian U20 national team and won the gold medal with this at the Junior World Championship in 1982 , the first for his home country in the history of the competition.
