Calhoun County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Marshall .

The county is located in the south of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 40 km to the south from Indiana and has an area of ​​1,861 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Eaton County , Jackson County , Hillsdale County , Branch County , Kalamazoo County, and Barry County .

history

Calhoun County was formed as the original Free Territory county in 1829. It was named after John C. Calhoun , a vice president of the USA. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet Counties , as it was named after a member of the cabinet of US President Andrew Jackson like some others .

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Marshall Historic District . A total of 46 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 18, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Calhoun County had 137,985 people in 54,100 households and 36,247 families. The population density was 75 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.93 percent white, 10.89 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 1.11 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.29 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.13 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
