Godfrey Ragwurz ( Ophrys gottfriediana Renz ) is a kind of the genus Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) in the family of the Orchid Family (Orchidaceae). It is classified by some authors as a subspecies ( Ophrys ferrum-equinum subsp. Gottfriediana (Renz) E. Nelson ) or as a variety ( Ophrys ferrum-equinum var. Gottfriediana (Renz) Biel ).

description

This perennial herbaceous plant is very similar in general appearance to the horseshoe ragwort ( Ophrys ferrum-equinum ). Above all, the dimensions of the flower organs , the hair on the lips and the shape of the mark are almost identical. In Gottfried's Ragwurz, however , the sepals are green to light pink in color. Usually the lateral ones appear more intense in the lower half. Very rarely do all sepals appear uniformly pink. Usually the central sepal is bent forward, but there are specimens that do not. The lip can be weakly three-lobed or undivided. However, it is always strongly convex in the front half , so that it appears pointed triangular when viewed from above.

The flowering period extends from March to April.

Location and distribution

Gottfried's Ragwurz occurs in light forests, garrigues and on poor grassland up to a height of 600  m . The distribution area is in Greece , where it is mainly concentrated on Epirus and the Ionian Islands . But there are also scattered occurrences in southern Greece and the Aegean Sea . It thrives at altitudes between 0 and 700 meters above sea level.
