Jany Renz

Jany Renz (born June 25, 1907 in Corfu , Greece ; † August 10, 1999 in Basel , Switzerland ) was a chemist and hobby botanist who had a particular passion for orchids . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Renz ".

Life

Jany Renz spent the first years of his life in Corfu. At the beginning of the First World War, the family moved to Ticino. He spent his childhood in Castel San Pietro and received private lessons from his mother. He attended middle school in Eastern Switzerland, while his parents moved back to Greece after the end of the war. After graduating from high school , Jany Renz spent two years in Greece, where he began his first botanical studies. He then studied chemistry with Heinrich Otto Wieland in Munich at the LMU . He interrupted his studies from time to time for longer stays in Greece and trips to North Africa and Asia Minor in search of orchids. In 1936 he began to work as a chemist in Arthur Stoll's research group at what was then Sandoz AG in Basel. In 1943 he married Sarah Märklin. They had two sons. When Stoll resigned from active management in 1956, Jany Renz was entrusted with the entire management of pharmaceutical chemical research and manufacturing. In 1971 he resigned from active business life and devoted himself to orchid cultivation. In 1994 his wife Sarah died. In 1997 he married Heidi Freudiger. Jany Renz died on August 10, 1999.
