Helmut Baumann (botanist)

Helmut Baumann (born May 20, 1937 in Gaildorf ; † May 15, 2014 in Stuttgart ) was a German pharmacist and botanist who devoted himself in particular to research into European-Mediterranean orchids . His botanical author's abbreviation is " H.Baumann ". His full name is Helmut Adolf Baumann.

Life

Helmut Baumann was born on May 20, 1937 in Gaildorf as the second of three children of the couple Paul Baumann and Gertrud Baumann. Buck born. Very early on in nature, Helmut Baumann studied pharmacy at the University of Tübingen after graduating from high school in 1957, which enabled him to pursue his floristic and botanical interests. During a guest semester in Innsbruck in 1962, he made many excursions to the Tyrolean Alps. From 1963 he worked as a pharmacist, first in Wilhelmshaven, then in Winnenden. In 1967 he was awarded a doctorate at the University of Tübingen with a thesis on the "steric course of mercury (II) -ÄDTA dehydration" . nat. PhD. From 1971 Baumann ran his own pharmacy in Böblingen. Baumann was with Brigitte Dorothee Baumann geb. Heugle (* 1938) is married and has two daughters, Susanne and Kathrin.

Services

Helmut Baumann mainly dealt with the domestic and European-Mediterranean orchids . To this end, he went on numerous excursions, photographed many types of plants and described a number of new taxa of orchids and published various books on the subject. He held various functions in the local orchid working group. Together with his wife and daughter, he endeavored to clarify and interpret the images in Leonhart Fuchs' herbal manuscript .
