Working groups for domestic orchids

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The local orchids working groups (AHO) are a Germany-wide association of regionally active associations in Germany , whose members deal with the research and conservation of wild orchids in Germany . The predecessor organization was founded in 1961, the “Working Group for the Observation and Protection of Native Orchids at the Institute for State Research and Nature Conservation Halle / Saale of the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Berlin”. In 1965 the working group brought out the first issue of the communications . In 1975 the working group joined the Kulturbund of the GDR and was named "Arbeitskreis Heimische Orchideen of the Central Technical Committee on Botany in the Kulturbund der DDR". Nobert Wišniewski headed the working group from its founding until his death in 1976.

In 1969, friends of orchids in Baden-Württemberg founded an association for the protection of local orchids under the name “Arbeitskreis Heimische Orchideen” (AHO). In 1972 the “Local Orchids Working Group” was founded in Lower Franconia. In 1974 an AHO was founded in Bavaria. In the next few years an AHO was founded in other federal states.

The individual regional associations regularly organize exhibitions, excursions and mapping in order to get to know the habitats of the various recent and historical orchid species. Furthermore, maintenance measures are carried out on biotopes in order to preserve orchid habitats.

Occasionally, land is bought or leased in order to preserve biotopes . Since many orchid species occur in biotopes that have arisen through historical management methods, orchid biotopes are maintained by members, often in collaboration with other conservationists. For this purpose, fallow, overgrown areas are mowed or cleared.

In most cases, the local orchid working groups also work with local nature conservation associations .

The reports from the Working Groups Native Orchids in Germany appear twice a year . In addition to publications on orchids from Germany, Europe and other regions of the world, it also repeatedly publishes initial scientific descriptions . The AHO Baden-Württemberg publishes its own magazine, the “Journal European Orchids”, which appears four times a year.

Public relations work in the form of specialist lectures is carried out at nature conservation associations, local communities and schools. Photo exhibitions and excursions also take place as part of public relations.

Since 1989, the working groups have chosen the orchid of the year every year .
