Ian Cathro (born July 11, 1986 in Dundee ) is a former Scottish football player and current football coach . In his career as a player, Cathro played in lower class clubs in Scotland. After ending his playing career early in 2009, he became a coach at the age of 22.

Career

As a player

Ian Cathro has played for Forfar Athletic and Brechin City in his career .

As a trainer

He began his coaching career at the age of 22 in his hometown at Dundee United . There he worked for three years as a youth coach. In 2012, Cathro became assistant coach to Nuno Espírito Santo at Rio Ave FC in Portugal. With it, the Scot joined together to start of season 2014/15 for FC Valencia . In June 2015, he dissolved the contract in Valencia. He then became assistant coach to Steve McClaren at Newcastle United . After McClaren was dismissed from the relegation-threatened Magpies in March 2016 , Cathro remained assistant coach under his successor Rafael Benítez . At the age of 30, Cathro took over the head coach of the Scottish first division club Heart of Midlothian in December 2016 after Robbie Neilson moved to Milton Keynes Dons . Cathro was released in August 2017.
