Ralf Dörnen

Ralf Dörnen (born 1960 in Leverkusen ) is a German choreographer and ballet director .

Live and act

Ralf Dörnen graduated from high school in Leverkusen in 1979 . He then completed ballet training from 1979 to 1980 at the “Institute for Stage Dance ” at the Cologne University of Music and Dance . In 1980 he received the recognition award at the Cologne Choreographic Competition. From 1980 he was a group dancer at the Hamburg Ballet under the ballet director and chief choreographer John Neumeier . In 1986 he became a soloist with the Hamburg Ballet, where he also worked with Mats Ek , Maurice Béjart , Jiří Kylián , Hans van Manen and Rudi van Dantzig and danced in choreographies by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins , José Limón , John Cranko and Murray Louis . In 1992 he worked as a choreographic assistant for Mats Ek.

From 1993 to 1997 he was a freelance choreographer and ballet master at the Hamburg Ballet, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg , the State Theater Nuremberg , the State Theater Oldenburg , the Bielefeld City Theaters , the Allee-Theater Hamburg and in Greece , Portugal and Senegal .

In 1997, the Theater Vorpommern appointed him as ballet director and chief choreographer. In 1999 he was a guest choreographer at the Semperoper Ballet in Dresden . From the 2021/2022 season, in addition to his role as ballet director, he will succeed Dirk Löschner as artistic director at the Theater Vorpommern.

Choreographies and productions (selection)

Since his engagement as ballet director and chief choreographer of BallettVorpommern in 1997, he created over 60 ballets for the Theater Vorpommern until 2016. The ballet " Transfigured Night " ( Arnold Schönberg ), created for the Semperoper Dresden in 1999, was also taken over by the Aalto Theater in Essen in 2005 and the National Theater in Brno in 2012. In 2006 he staged his first opera with Benjamin Britten'sDeath in Venice ”.
