Karl Kahler
Karl Kahler (also Carl, born September 12, 1856 in Linz , † April 18, 1906 in San Francisco ) was an Austrian genre and animal painter .
Life
Kahler studied since October 19, 1874 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Ludwig von Löfftz and Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger . After graduating, he spent some time studying in Paris , then he settled in Munich .
Karl Kahler soon became known as a cat painter. From 1881 to 1888 he exhibited his works in Berlin , Munich and Vienna . In 1885 he emigrated to Australia and worked in Melbourne until 1890 . Here he painted three pictures of the Melbourne Cup. In one of these pictures - it is titled The Betting Ring - each person in the crowd appears as an individual portrait.
He later moved to the United States . In 1891 he created the picture My Wife's Lovers with the representation of 42 cats for Kate Birdsall Johnson . The picture achieved a high level of popularity as an art print due to its high circulation.
Karl Kahler died at the age of 49 as a victim of the San Francisco earthquake .
