The City of Milwaukee combined passenger and rail ferry is the last surviving ship in its series on the Great Lakes.

details

The ferry, launched on November 25, 1930, marked the end of a series of six sister ships built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company from 1923 onwards . The first two units were built for the Pere Marquette Railroad , followed by a single ship for the Ann Arbor Railroad , after which the three ships of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad joined. The City of Milwaukee was to replace the 1929 decline in a storm Milwaukee provided.

The ferry spent most of its operating time with its first shipping company, the Grand Trunk Milwaukee Car Ferry Company on Lake Michigan . Nevertheless the ship was chartered out from time to time. In 1979 the state of Michigan acquired the ship and used it for another two years in service with the Ann Arbor Railroad before it was decommissioned in 1981 when the ferry lines across the lakes were abandoned.

At the instigation of the Northwest Michigan Maritime Museum and the residents of Frankfort , Michigan, the City of Milwaukee was saved from scrapping in 1983. Two years later, the Society for the Preservation of the SS City of Milwaukee was established as an advocacy group. After the ship received the title of National Historic Landmark in 1990 , it was later added to the list of the Historic Naval Ships Association due to its involvement in World War II . After the possibility of a permanent berth in the historic Ann Arbor Railroad Marine Terminal in the port of Frankfort was lost, the ship was moved to Manistee in 2004 . Since May 18, 2004, the City of Milwaukee has been at the Marina of the Moonlite Motel on Lake Manistee.
