Bishop International Airport ( IATA : FNT , ICAO : KFNT ) is an airport in Flint in the US state of Michigan . It is named after the banker and General Motors board member Arthur Giles Bishop (1851–1944), who donated 220 acres of his farmland to the airport in 1928 . Michigan's third largest airport after Detroit and Grand Rapids surpassed competitor MBS International Airport in terms of flight activities in 2002 . In 2005 more than 1.1 million passengers used the Bishop International Airport; thereafter, the number of passengers fell to only around 793,000 in 2016. It is part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) national plan for integrated flight systems 2017-2021 , in which it is categorized as a small hub for commercial services. The regional airlines of Delta Air Lines , United and American Airlines as well as FedEx and Allegiant Air mainly fly from the airport to nearby cities such as Chicago , but also to other US states such as. B. Florida . The airlines are accompanied by the airport operator Av Flight, which looks after both general aviation and commercial flight operations as well as the American Wings Aviation flight school. The airport is located in the southwest of Flint and is surrounded by Flint Township to the north, east and west and Mundy Township to the south.

Renovations

At the beginning of February 2007, Bishop International Airport presented a comprehensive five-year development plan that is to be continued through the end of 2011. The program saw two phases of the Intermodal Facility Development (German: development of intermodal facilities) before, including the expansion of the western cargo apron , now known as Abex and Emory GVA Freight ramp on the northwest side of the airport.

In May 2009, the Bishop International Airport began the first phase of its Terminal Airside & Concourse Improvements program (German: improvements on the airside of the terminal and in the terminal). Projects in this phase were developed in 2008. This phase includes the expansion of the terminal ramp where the passenger hall is located, the final closure and dismantling of runway 5/23 as well as the acquisition of new land for a planned runway 9L / 27R, which was planned and 2010 should be built.

Runway 5/23 was closed permanently on May 4, 2009, as the progress made in the context of the Capital Improvement Program (German: program for capital improvement) was continued.

The renovation and expansion of the terminal, built in 1993, was designed by Reynolds, Smith & Hills .

On April 24, 2012, the airport's board of directors approved a $ 1.348 million project to repair the airport apron. On September 19, 2012, it was announced that the Federal Aviation Administration had approved a grant to fund the project.

On October 6, 2012, the new security checkpoint of the Transportation Security Administration was opened in the terminal .

The expanded terminal was inaugurated on November 13, 2012.

The airport's board of directors provided an additional $ 10.9 million for expansion in 2013 and 2014.

On August 29, 2013, the airport received a US Department of Transportation grant of $ 2.87 million that was used to repair taxiways and lighting, as well as purchase a replacement snow vehicle.

On September 28, 2017, the airport received a US $ 4,302,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to rehabilitate the surface of Taxiway C, build strips of asphalt, and provide runway protection lights at every access point to the runway.

On July 30, 2018, the FAA granted the airport a grant of $ 4,012,542 (approx. € 3,500) for the construction, renovation and lighting of taxiways.
