The Rickenbacker International Airport ( IATA code : LCK , ICAO code : KLCK ) is an international airport in the American city ​​of Columbus in the US state of Ohio .

It is the second largest airport in the city after Port Columbus International Airport . Most of the air traffic is caused by general aviation and military flights . The airport is also important for cargo air traffic in the Columbus region.

Location and transport links

Rickenbacker International Airport is located 17 kilometers south of downtown Columbus. The Ohio State Route 317 runs north of the airport. In addition, Interstate 270 runs six kilometers north and US Highway 23 six kilometers west of the airport. Rickenbacker International Airport is not involved in local public transport , passengers have to use taxis.

history

The airport opened in June 1942 as Lockbourne Army Airfield (after the neighboring town of Lockbourne ) and soon afterwards renamed the Northeastern Training Center of the Army Air Corps . In 1948 the airfield was renamed Lockbourne Air Force Base , in 1973 after the Columbus-born fighter pilot Edward Vernon Rickenbacker in Rickenbacker Air Force Base and in 1980 in Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base .

In 1991 the base was proposed for closure, but continued to be operated through a 1993 proposal by the state of Ohio . It was renamed Rickenbacker Air National Guard Station in 1994 . 2001 saw the laying of the foundation stone for new facilities at the military air base.

In 2003 the former Rickenbacker Port Authority merged with the other airport operators in the region to form the Columbus Regional Airport Authority .

Runways

Rickenbacker International Airport is equipped with two parallel runways . The southern runway 05R / 23L is 3689 meters long and 61 meters wide. The northern runway 05L / 23R is 3,628 meters long and 46 meters wide.

The Rickenbacker International Airport in regular service exclusively on the low-cost airline Allegiant Air fly. This operates direct flights to 11 national destinations, but five destinations are only served seasonally.

Incidents

  • On 1 September 2008 plunged Convair CV-580 of Air Tahoma shortly after takeoff one mile southwest of the airport in a corn field, all three occupants died. The crash was caused by gross maintenance errors (see also Air Tahoma flight 587 ) .
