The Akron-Canton Airport ( IATA code : CAK , ICAO code : KCAK ) is the regional commercial airport of American cities Akron and Canton in the US state of Ohio .

Location and transport links

Akron-Canton Regional Airport is located 20 kilometers south of downtown Akron and 14 kilometers north of downtown Canton. It is located between Interstate 77 , which runs on the east side of the airport, and Ohio State Route 241, which runs on the west side of the airport . Most of the airport is in the Green City area .

The Akron-Canton Regional Airport is by buses in the public transport involved. The METRO RTA Route 110 and the SARTA Route 81 run to the airport regularly.

history

In 1940, in the wake of World War II which provided Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) 500 million dollars for the construction of airports available, of which 231,600 US dollars (equivalent to 4.2 million US dollars in today's money) for the construction of a small airfield at Canton. After the attack on Pearl Harbor , the CAA announced in October 1942 that it would provide $ 2 million (equivalent to $ 31 million in today's purchasing power) for an airport near Canton, which also had three 5,600 ft (1,707 m) long runways should be usable for military aircraft.

A bill drafted by a commission made up of Counties Summit and Stark to ensure the financial resources and joint management of the airport by both counties was rejected by the Ohio Senate . Nevertheless, the commission announced in 1943 that the airport north of Canton in Summit County would be built, with Stark County contributing 100,000 dollars towards the costs of the land purchase. After a Canton attorney prevented the use of Stark County's taxpayer's money, the Chamber of Commerce found local private investors, including the Timken Company , Hoover, and Diebold, to raise the county's stake.

Originally the airport was to be named Canton-Akron Memorial Airport in honor of the veterans of the First and Second World War . To represent the city of Massillon, which was also involved in the planning , the name was changed to Akron-Canton-Massillon Airport and later to Akron-Canton Regional Airport before the opening .

The regional airport opened in October 1946, but the airlines American Airlines , Eastern Air Lines , Capital Airlines and United Airlines , which had previously served Akron Municipal Airport , did not receive approval from the Civil Aeronautics Board to move to the new airport until 1948 .

Construction work on a reception building began in 1955 after financing problems had repeatedly delayed the start of construction. In 1956, 193,000 passengers used Akron-Canton Regional Airport. In 1966 the airport was connected to the recently completed Interstate 77 .
