history
The airport was originally used by the United States Army Air Forces in 1942 as a training facility for the Air Training Command . The airport, then called Gulfport Army Airfield , opened on July 7, 1942. With the end of the war and the use of the military, the airport was given reserve status on January 31, 1946 and opened for civil use in 1949. In the early 1950s, Southern Airways and later National Airlines began flying to the airport. Due to the Cold War, it was decided that the airport would again be used as a Gulfport Air Force Base and the air base was officially opened on July 16, 1951. In 1977 the cities of Gulfport and Biloxi together with Harrison County founded the Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport Authority, which has operated the airport ever since.
In August 2005, Hurricane Catrina destroyed almost all of the airport's buildings, so that the airport and terminals had to be rebuilt by 2011 for $ 287 million.
