The Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport is the airport of Jackson , the capital of the US state Mississippi and also the largest airport in Mississippi.
history
After the previous Hawkins Field airport became too small at the beginning of the jet age , the city of Jackson began in 1963 to acquire land in Rankin County for a new civil and military airfield. The airport was one of the first to use parallel runways instead of the previously common, intersecting runways for operation under wind from different directions. While the area was named after the then mayor as Allen C. Thompson Field , the airport was named Jackson Municipal Airport .
In 1989, US Customs designated the airport as a border crossing and the name was changed to Jackson International Airport . It received its current name in honor of the civil rights activist Medgar Evers .
