Hawkins Field is an airfield in Jackson , the capital of the US state Mississippi .

history

The City of Jackson bought 151 acres of pasture land for $ 53,500 in 1928 to set up an airfield. The inauguration of the place called Davis Field after the previously located farm took place on November 9th. The first scheduled flight of Delta Air Lines led on June 17, 1929 from Love Field in Dallas to Davis Field - with stopovers in Shreveport and Monroe .

In 1936, the Civilian Conservation Corps built a reception building and paved apron as part of the WPA program for $ 62,150 (the equivalent of $ 1,140,000) . In 1941 the airfield was given its current name in honor of a local politician. In the same year, the military use of the airfield began under the name Jackson Air Base , initially as a flight school for the Dutch government in exile , and later also for the United States Army Air Forces .

In January 1949, the airfield was returned to civilian use, and from 1953 it was also used by the Mississippi Air National Guard . In 1963 the city built a new airport in Rankin County , which has been used by both the National Guard and civil airlines ever since.

business

Hawkins Field is now used for General Aviation and National Guard flights.
