Nathaniel Macon

The city of Macon and Macon County's roots date back to the early 19th century when, on January 6, 1837, the previously independent Counties Chariton and Randolph were merged into Macon County.

The name of both the town and the county was chosen in honor of Nathaniel Macon , who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and who served in both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate for many years as a representative of North Carolina .

Macon's settlement was slow. 20% of today's Macon residents have German roots, 14% British and another 14% Irish. A very special day in Macon's history was June 22, 1822 when Dr. Andrew Taylor Still founded the science of osteopathy . Thanks to this important day, Macon is still closely associated with osteopathy to this day.

In the run-up to the 2004 presidential election , Macon citizens donated more to the Republican Party and its candidate George W. Bush than to any other party.
