Tatjana Maria (* 8. August 1987 as Tatjana Malek in Bad Saulgau ) is a German tennis player .

Career

Tatiana started playing tennis at the age of four. At the beginning of her career she played at TC Biberach and for TC RW Tuttlingen in the top league. In the Bundesliga she became German team champion with TC Radolfzell in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 she moved to the first division promoted Ratinger TC Grün-Weiß .

2004 to 2007

Maria's junior career was inconspicuous. Although she reached the top 50 in the world junior rankings in 2004 and competed in the junior tournaments of all Grand Slams, she was eliminated there in the first round except for Wimbledon 2004 . At the "International Whitsun Cup Tournament" of the Altlünen eV tennis club in 2005, she was able to secure the title after a 6: 4, 6: 4 final success over the Bulgarian Dessislawa Topalowa. In the same year she celebrated her debut on the WTA Tour when she received a wildcard for qualification from the organizers of the renowned WTA tournament in Berlin . However, she was eliminated there as in Filderstadt and Luxembourg after a defeat in the first qualifying round.

In 2006, after losing two finals in the $ 25,000 tournaments in Les Contamines and Hechingen , she won her first title on the ITF tour in succession. At the indoor tournament in Luxembourg she was able to qualify for the main draw of a WTA tournament for the first time. But there followed, as in Stuttgart , where she started with a wildcard and Anna-Lena Grönefeld was defeated in the first round. In 2007 she won her first main round match on the WTA Tour against Wassilissa Bardina in Berlin , but had no chance in round two against Justine Henin . After moving into the top 100 in the world, she was in the main draw in both Wimbledon and the 2007 US Open , but lost in the first round. She continued to earn a large part of her world ranking points on the ITF tour, where she won her biggest title to date after defeating the young Petra Kvitová at the end of the season in Bratislava .

2008 to 2013

In 2008 she suffered a pulmonary embolism due to a thrombosis at the Indian Wells tournament and had to take a three-month break. As a result, she fell far behind in the world rankings, but won against Kristina Barrois in front of a home crowd in Biberach . She celebrated her first major successes on the WTA Tour with the quarter-finals in three tournaments in the International category. So she was eliminated as a qualifier in Barcelona in the round of the last eight with 4: 6, 0: 6 against Carla Suárez Navarro ; 2010 in Pattaya she was defeated by Jaroslawa Schwedowa and again in Marbella by Suárez Navarro. Before that, she was able to win her first game in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament against Jelena Dokić in Wimbledon in 2009, also as a qualifier, and triumphed in the New York Bronx , after another final victory against Barrois, for the second time at an ITF tournament of the highest Category.

Nevertheless, Maria did not manage to establish herself on the WTA Tour, so after numerous early defeats in 2011 she was forced to build up her ranking again by winning the ITF Tour. A respectable success achieved her with reaching the second round at the US Open 2012 , when she moved out of qualification in the second round, where she was defeated by Sloane Stephens . After her baby break in 2013, she returned to the tour at the WTA tournament in Bogotá , but played mostly on the ITF tour for the rest of the season. During maternity leave, she decided to switch from two-handed to one-handed backhand.

Comeback after maternity leave

In 2015, she made international headlines for the first time when she defeated a top 10 player for the first time in the second round of the Paribas Open in Indian Wells , Eugenie Bouchard . At Wimbledon she fought her way into the third round of a Grand Slam tournament and back into the top 100 in the world for the first time after a 10: 8 win in extra time against Duan Yingying ; there she lost to Madison Keys in two sentences. After six years she ended a tennis season among the top 100 in the world rankings. In the following season, Maria reached the second round in Melbourne and Paris . After she suffered a close three-set defeat to Alizé Cornet at the French Open , she subsequently raised serious allegations against the French woman and alleged that she had taken two medical breaks for tactical reasons in order to influence the momentum of the match in her favor.

In 2017, Maria won a tournament on grass for the first time in Southsea . She also reached two other finals at ITF tournaments of the highest category. In Québec she reached the semifinals of a WTA tournament for the first time, but failed there straight to Alison Van Uytvanck . Due to consistently good results on the ITF tour, she was listed among the top 50 in the world for the first time at the turn of the year.

She experienced her career highlight at the Mallorca Open 2018 , where, after 14 defeats in 16 games since the beginning of the year, she sensationally won her first individual title on the WTA Tour. In the final, she beat last year's Latvian winner Anastasija Sevastova 6: 4 and 7: 5. Then she won her second win against a top 10 player in the opening round of Wimbledon against Elina Switolina , but failed in round two after winning six matches in a row against Kristina Mladenovic . Although she slipped in the world rankings again in 2019, she achieved her best result so far at a tournament in the Premier Mandatory category in Miami after a sovereign victory over Sloane Stephens with the fourth round. Also thanks to her advancement to the semi-finals in Nottingham , where she lost to Donna Vekić , she finished in the top 100 in the world for the third year in a row in 2019.

Double

In doubles, Maria and alternating partners have already won four WTA titles at tournaments in the international category. In 2009 she and Andrea Petković lost the final against the pairing Andrea Hlaváčková / Lucie Hradecká in Bad Gastein with 2: 6, 4: 6. She won her first title on the WTA Tour in September 2012 in Quebec together with Kristina Mladenovic. In 2016 she won the triumph in Bogotá alongside Lara Arruabarrena , in 2018 she won the doubles competition with Heather Watson in Acapulco and in 2019, again together with Arruabarrena, the tournament in Seoul . She achieved her best Grand Slam result in 2018 alongside Watson when she reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon . There the duo had to admit defeat in three close sets to third-placed Czechs Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková .

Fed Cup

Her first Fed Cup appearance was against China in July 2006, when she defeated Sun Tiantian in the singles . In her second game against Croatia in April 2007 , she won the decisive point for the German team when she defeated Ivana Lisjak 6-2 and 6-3. In July 2007 she contributed decisively to the 3-2 victory of the German team against Japan ; she won both singles and doubles alongside Anna-Lena Grönefeld . Your recent Fed Cup record, however, is rather mixed. In 2008 she lost her singles and doubles against the USA. In 2009 she won her doubles against Switzerland, but lost the singles in the game against China. In February 2010, she lost - again at Grönefeld's side - the double that was decisive for the encounter against the Czech Republic . In April 2010 she lost her singles to Aravane Rezaï . In her mission in February 2011 she defeated the Slovenian double Polona Hercog / Katarina Srebotnik with Grönefeld .

After a break of several years, Maria was reassigned to the Fed Cup team in 2018 and made a decisive contribution to winning the game against Belarus in the first round of the world group with two wins in one defeat . Since 2006, Maria has played a total of 18 singles and doubles matches for the German team, of which she won eleven (6: 5 in singles).
