Melanie Jayne South (born May 3, 1986 in Kingston upon Thames , England ) is a former British tennis player .

Career

South, who started playing tennis at age seven, preferred grass and hard courts according to the ITF profile.

In 2004 she won her first tournament wins (singles and doubles) at the ITF Women's Circuit , where she won a total of six singles and 24 doubles tournaments. Her greatest success, however, was reaching the second round in the women's singles of the Wimbledon Championships in 2006 with a victory over Francesca Schiavone .

In 2005 she played for the TG Alsterquelle Henstedt-Ulzburg in the 2nd tennis Bundesliga . She also played four games for the British Fed Cup team .

On December 2, 2013, she announced the end of her career.
