The Swiss Indoors Basel 2014 was a tennis tournament that took place in Basel from October 20-26, 2014 . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2014 and was played indoors on a hard court. In the same week, the Valencia Open 500 was played in Valencia , which, like the Swiss Indoors Basel, belonged to the ATP World Tour 500 category . The venue for the tournament was the St. Jakobshalle , which is located just behind the Basel city limits in Münchenstein .

Defending champion in the singles was Juan Martín del Potro , who defeated local hero Roger Federer in three sets in the previous two finals . Due to a protracted injury to his right wrist, del Potro had ended his season prematurely and was therefore unable to defend his title. His substitute player Richard Gasquet , who was given a wildcard , had to announce his cancellation shortly before the start of the tournament due to an injury. His compatriot Julien Benneteau , who also canceled shortly before the start of the tournament, was also not there .

After having to forego participation in the previous year due to an injury, the former world number one Rafael Nadal competed at the Swiss Indoors Basel this year despite an inflamed appendix. The biggest surprise of the tournament came in the quarter-finals, when Nadal was defeated by wildcard player Borna Ćorić in two sets and this was the first time he reached a semi-final in his second professional season. He lost this against David Goffin , who in turn was clearly defeated in the final by five-time winner Roger Federer in two sets. For Federer, who has already reached the final of his home tournament eleven times, it was the sixth victory in Basel and his 82nd title in his career.

The defending champions Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot were in doubles . While Treat Huey did not play in Basel, Dominic Inglot played alongside Florin Mergea and failed in the semifinals against eventual tournament winners Vasek Pospisil and Nenad Zimonjić . For the Canadian-Serbian duo it was the first joint title on the ATP World Tour. With Pospisil this was the third double title of his career and with Zimonjić the 53rd title as well as his fourth success in Basel after winning the tournament in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 32 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs.
