Burial ground

The Hardter Forest has a Celtic burial mound field from the Bronze Age and the earlier Iron Age that was rediscovered in the 1870s ( ). World icon

“On the border of our community, towards Hardt, there are a lot of hills that are known as“ Hunshügel ”. They are mostly to the left of the road leading to Hardt in spruce forests and have been the target of recent excavations. The hills consist of poured earth, are round and of different heights and dimensions and contain an urn in the center. The urns made of baked clay only become hard again in the open air, they are light or dark brown, over the bone remnants they contain, earth is mixed with wood ash and charcoal. "

- F. Schulte in a letter to the Society of Friends of Antiquity in the Rhineland from 1873

The burial ground is located between the Matthias Chapel , a brick saint's house, and the Herdter Hof, mainly on the west side of the Hardter Landstrasse, which connects Hardt with Rheindahlen . The burial ground was established between 800 and 500  BC. BC and consists of 255 round hills, ten long beds and a number of flat graves that cannot be precisely determined. The size of the graves varies between four and 30 meters in diameter, the average height today is less than one meter, as the weather has significantly reduced the height over the millennia. Some long graves measure 17, others almost 100 meters in length. The local researcher Albert Mackes († 1969) counts the eye-catching ground monument to the largest Iron Age burial grounds in the Rhineland . The extension is around 700 meters from west to east and around two kilometers from north to south. Unplanned excavations from the end of the 19th century until the Prussian excavation law came into force in 1914 destroyed many graves and grave goods were sometimes stolen. The construction of the road from Hardt to Rheindahlen and the associated clearing and excavation also destroyed some graves. During excavations, among others by the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn , grave goods such as vessels and urns were found here, 20 of which are on display in the Rheydt Castle Museum.

Pulmonary sanatorium

The Hardterwald Clinic is located on the south-eastern edge of the Hardter Forest in a park-like area of 120 acres with old trees on Louise-Gueury-Straße leading from Hardt to Hehn. The facility consists of the main building of the clinic, an administration building, the Villa Louise and a coach house (see picture) . Construction of the facility began in spring 1903 and the sanatorium was inaugurated on August 3, 1904. The facility was named after the founder, Louise Gueury . In the will of the founder, who herself died of tuberculosis in 1900 , it was stipulated that a large part of the property should be used to establish and maintain a people's sanctuary for curable lung patients. In addition, a contingent of free beds should be set up for the citizens of Mönchengladbach who could not afford the hospital stay financially. Dernbacher religious sisters ( poor servants of Jesus Christ ) were appointed to care for the patients , who performed their duties until 1991. The plant was supplied by its own farms such as bakery, butchery, laundry and agriculture in the form of pig fattening.

During the Second World War , the sanatorium was used to treat tuberculous soldiers and prisoners of war. In 1954 a new building with 62 beds was added to the clinic. Because of the further development from a pure lung sanatorium to a specialist hospital for lung and bronchial medicine, the clinic was named Hardterwald Clinic in 1959 . Thus, in the 1960s, it was converted into a modern lung clinic. The farms were closed due to inefficiency until the end of the 1970s. In 1984 the geriatric department was established, which in the following years took over the free capacities of the pulmonary clinic and later the whole house.

In the Hardter forest there are some buildings that are listed as architectural monuments. A selection follows.

Heart park

After the clinic was sold to the private clinic group Eifelhöhen-Klinik AG in October 2010, the 23-hectare area with the buildings on it was redesigned into a rehabilitation center called Herzpark . One of the founders of the concept was Wilfried Jacobs . In January 2014, 100 places will be set up for patients who need a place after heart surgery. A further 40 inpatient beds will be added by the beginning of 2015, as well as the option of treating 40 inpatients. The total cost of the renovation is around 40 million euros. Geriatrics was also outsourced and in July 2012 moved to the neighboring Elisabeth Hospital, which is under the administration of the department.
