Windberg is a district in the north of the independent city Mönchengladbach in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

It belongs to the Mönchengladbach Nord district and is located between the districts of Venn (in the west), Eicken and Neuwerk (in the east), city center (in the south) and the city of Viersen in the north.

population

Towards the end of the 19th century, Windberg began to experience strong population growth. From around 600 inhabitants in 1880, the number rose to around 2,000 residents within eight years. Since the 1990s, the population in Windberg has fluctuated around 8,000 people; in 2009, 8045 people lived there.

Architecture and city history

church

In 1859, on October 16, the first school was opened in the municipality of Windberg. Parts of the Anna School buildings are still in use today. The Church of St. Anna , built in 1909 in Windberg by the Aachen architect Josef Schmitz, is an example of “style architecture”. Ernst Jansen-Winkeln painted his first large mural of the larger than life enthroned Christ for this church in 1933 . Jakob Hubert Eschweiler was chaplain of the parish from 1918 to 1922 . After the British soldiers finally moved out of their Mönchengladbach headquarters in 2013, the characteristic white houses they had previously lived in became vacant, especially near the colorful garden on Danziger and Königsberger Strasse. With the departure of the British, the so-called “English Quarter” in Windberg also disappeared and with it a piece of decades of history. Two apartment buildings were built on the English soccer field.

Events

An independent rifle festival takes place in Windberg every year. The festival was organized by the St. Brigitta Brotherhood until 1956 , and since then by the Mönchengladbach Windberg-Großheide citizens' shooting association founded in 1956 .

Sports

The football club Fortuna Mönchengladbach e. V. from 1907 as well as TV 1848. The latter offers a variety of sports in addition to football. The traditional tennis club “TG Rot-Weiss”, which is the venue of the “NRW Junior Open”, an international U18 tennis tournament, is located in the “Bunter Garten” area. The former soccer player Oliver Neuville lived in the border area of ​​Großheide .

Education and infrastructure

In addition to two kindergartens, two elementary schools and a grammar school, there is a nursing home in Windberg.
