Josef Schmitz (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Schmitz (also Joseph ; born November 8, 1860 in Aachen , † March 29, 1936 in Nuremberg ) was a German architect .

Life

The son of the Aachen court painter , draftsman and graphic artist Michael Hubert Schmitz was a pupil of Georg von Hauberrisser and from 1887 he carried out the restoration of the Sebalduskirche in Nuremberg with him. Schmitz also worked for a while with the well-known church builder Franz Josef Denzinger and after his death in 1894 took over the management of the construction of the Adalberokirche in Würzburg - a prestigious building that was finally shown at the World Exhibition in Paris . Numerous church building projects followed, especially in the Franconian region . Josef Schmitz became Bavarian state master builder and expert advisor to the highest building authority and was entrusted with the restoration of the Nuremberg main churches St. Lorenz and St. Sebald.

He brought the strong engagement with medieval architecture into his restorations, which tried to restore the original condition of the buildings. In the Moritzkapelle in Nuremberg, for example, he dismantled all of Carl Alexander Heideloff's romanticizing changes . In his new buildings, he opposed the romantic transfiguration of the buildings of the Middle Ages with his conception of Gothic style, a scientifically based reception of the old styles. In the historicist church building "he represented the direction of the finely felt and well thought-out style buildings" . Schmitz was a representative of the so-called Nuremberg style and placed great value on the sculptural design of his buildings as an architectural total work of art. Heinz Schiestl created the interiors in many of his buildings .

Schmitz was from 1918 to 1936 a member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts , in the section for fine arts.
