Heinz Schiestl , actually Heinrich Schiestl (born February 23, 1867 in Zell am Ziller , † April 11, 1940 in Würzburg ), was an Austro-German sculptor and graphic artist .

Life

Heinrich Schiestl, son of a Zillertal- based carver, Matthäus Schiestl the Elder (1834–1915), the oldest of the three Schiestl brothers . The Schiestl family moved to Würzburg in 1873. Heinrich Schiestl attended the Petererschule here and, like his brothers Matthäus and Rudolf , apprenticed to his father, Matthäus the Elder. He also received drawing and modeling lessons at the Central Polytechnic Association in Würzburg and at the Schmidschen private school in Munich. From 1892 Schiestl studied for two semesters with Syrius Eberle in Munich. He took over his father's workshop in Würzburg in 1896. In 1908 he married the Munich elementary school teacher Linda Wölfel, who died in 1922 at the age of 46. In 1937, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, the city of Würzburg awarded him the Silver City Plaque and the Riemenschneider Prize for Fine Arts. On April 11, 1940, Heinz Schiestl died of ascites and was buried at the main cemetery in Würzburg .

Heinz Schiestl furnished numerous Franconian churches with his altars , stations of the cross , statues and other works. The high altar of St. Burkard (Würzburg) is a joint effort by the brothers Heinz and Matthäus Schiestl. Numerous war memorials and secular pieces were also created.

More than 20 cities commissioned Schiestl to design emergency money . The so-called Schiestl notes, created after the First World War , are still actively traded.
