Matthäus Schiestl (born March 27, 1869 in Gnigl (Salzburg), † January 30, 1939 in Munich ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Schiestl was born in Gnigl ​​in 1869 as the son of the carver Matthäus Schiestl the Elder. In 1873 the family moved to Würzburg . There Schiestl, like his brothers Heinz and Rudolf, completed an apprenticeship in his father's workshop. In 1894 he began training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . There he was a student of Wilhelm von Diez and finally became a master student of Ludwig von Löfftz . In 1905 he went on an educational trip to the Holy Land and Egypt . In 1912 he was appointed professor.

Schiestl became a member of the Hetzfeld rafters ' guild, which was founded in 1905 . Between 1920 and 1939 he worked as a painter in St. Wendel .

Awards

  • 1897 Awarded the silver medal in the competition of the Munich Academy for his "Annunciation of the Shepherds"
