The son of the glazier Franz Josef Schmitz and Helene Hubertine Neumann drew attention to themselves early on with drawings, sacred paintings and stained glass, so that, on the recommendation of Cologne Archbishop Johannes von Geissel , he was able to visit the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After completing his studies, he returned to Aachen and ran a glass painter's workshop here .
In addition to the royal stained glass in Berlin, Schmitz was involved in furnishing the Aachen Cathedral at the beginning of the 1850s , where he made some windows: “The royal court glass painter Michael Schmitz in Aachen delivered the pictures for the 6th and 10th window. to 10th] the canopies and plinth, on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th and 11th the musical works and rosettes. ”Schmitz was awarded the title of Prussian court painter for these works . Furthermore, in the 1860s in Aachen, among other things, he equipped the Church of St. Paul with glass mosaic windows as well as the Theresienkirche in Pontstraße and the Franciscan monastery in Monheimsallee, which no longer existed. In the modern Johanneskirche Mußbach , the home parish of Cardinal Archbishop Geissel, an old glass window signed by Schmitz with his portrait (1858) is built into the side chapel.
In the Galleria delle Carte Geografiche of the Vatican Museums in Rome, von Schmitz could see from the 1860s "[...] in the window of the last room a glass painting of rare perfection [...]" depicting Pope Pius IX. depicted. As a result, Michael Hubert Schmitz awarded His Holiness the Order of Commandeur of Saint Gregory the Great in October 1863 . (Ordine Equestre Pontificio di San Gregorio Magno (Papal Order of Knights of St. Gregory the Great))
Michael Hubert Schmitz was first married to Berta von Loevenich (1826–1879), with whom he had several children, including his son Josef Schmitz , who moved to Bavaria as an architect and became a master builder in Nuremberg . Michael Hubert Schmitz found his final resting place in Aachen's Ostfriedhof .
