St. Nikolaus (Wörth am Main)
The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus is historically the third church in Wörth am Main .
prehistory
Of the oldest church in the village, a medieval building dedicated to Saint Martin , only the Gothic choir , which dates from around 1400 and is now used as a cemetery chapel, remains.
Structurally, this first church was followed by the former parish church of St. Wolfgang . It has been documented since 1328, but its oldest surviving components only date from the second half of the 15th century. The upper part of the tower was raised or completely renewed in 1631; the nave dates from 1729–1748. This second church was abandoned in 1903 in favor of St. Nikolaus, profaned and now houses the Wörth am Main shipping and shipbuilding museum .
Since the town center repeatedly suffered from the flooding of the Main , the higher-lying district of Neu-Wörth was built as a planned settlement with a geometric floor plan after the flood of 1882.
building
The church of St. Nikolaus was built there from 1897. It was consecrated in 1898 by Bishop Ferdinand von Schlör . A three-aisled basilica was built on a cross-shaped floor plan in neo-Romanesque - Byzantine forms according to plans by Josef Schmitz , Nuremberg . The main tower is arranged at the angle between the choir and the north transept. Next to the side entrance is a mount of olives with almost life-size figures.
Furnishing
Some of the furnishings from the former parish church of St. Wolfgang were taken away when the parish moved and placed in the new parish church. This includes above all the Wörther Altar . Most of the furnishings, which were otherwise generous from the time of construction, have been preserved.
organ
The organ of the St. Nicholas Church was built in 1934 by the organ building company Philipps ( Aschaffenburg ). Initially, some competing companies tried to prevent the building, with reference to the Jewish origins of the Philipps organ building company. After this instrument was later adapted to the sound conceptions of the organ movement, the instrument was comprehensively overhauled in 1989 by the organ construction company Gustav Weiß ( Zellingen ) and partially restored to its original state. Today the instrument has 24 stops on two manuals and a pedal ( cone chest ). The game and stop actions are electro-pneumatic .
