Venn (colloquially Venner ) is a district in the Nord district in Mönchengladbach , North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .

geography

City structure

The place Venn is divided into so-called Honschaften . These correspond almost to the original honors from the Middle Ages .

In detail, it concerns Alt-Venn , Poeth , Hamern , Rönneter and Beltinghoven .

Other towns in the vicinity

Other parts of the town and district of Mönchengladbach near Venn are Großheide , Hardt , Rasseln , Windberg and Winkeln .

Not far away are the districts of Bergerstraße , Bockert , Bötzlöh and Ompert in the neighboring town of Viersen to the north .

history

The first documentary evidence of the districts goes back to the honors in the high Middle Ages. The following are known as feudal people of the abbey:

  • Heinrich von Rönneter (1183–1190)
  • Conrad of Venn (1247)
  • Anselm von Winkeln (1247)
  • Hermann von Hamern (1303)
  • Johann von Beltinghoven

Incorporations

If Venn and Beltinghoven belonged to the parish of St. Mary Conception Venn from the start, Hamern and Rönneter only joined them later. After the protests against the building of their own church, the citizens of Rönnet joined the community in 1873, the Hamerner in 1909.

Population development

Venn has 9,048 inhabitants. (As of September 30, 2013). On January 1, 2000 there were 9407 inhabitants, on December 31, 2012 there were 8,998 inhabitants.

Culture and sights

Church of St. Mary the Conception

In September 1869 the church was completed after two years of construction. The fact that Venn got its own church is mainly due to pastor Lelotte, who at the request of the Venn and Beltinghoven believers supported the building.

The church was built by the neo-Gothic master builder Vincenz Statz . Erected in a cross shape, it was 105 feet long, 34 feet high, and 46 feet in diameter.

The first holy mass could be held on October 17, 1869. The inauguration took place on July 27, 1872 by Paulus Melchers , Archbishop of Cologne, who held a pontifical high mass with a subsequent confirmation of 106 children. The high altar was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the right side altar in honor of St. Joseph and the left side altar were consecrated in honor of the Mother of God. The church, more precisely the main and side altars, still keep the relics of St. Engelbert and St. Polycarp up.

The previous rectorate, headed by Chaplain Ferdinand Mürriger, was appointed parish on February 17, 1873 by the archbishopric. Mürriger was appointed pastor and introduced on March 26, 1873.

It was also Pastor Mürriger who built the "Kalvarienberg" in 1885 and shortly afterwards the "Lourdes Grotto". This made Venn a place of pilgrimage for many believers from all over Germany and the neighboring countries.

Pastor Ferdinand Mürriger died at the age of 62 on November 8th, 1896. His successor, Pastor Johann Morenhofen, realized Mürriger's plans to expand the church for the congregation, which has now grown to 2,000 souls. The “new” church could be designated on December 20, 1908, after the entire renovation was carried out with donations. A hexagonal chapel, a sacristy and a nave were added on both sides. This inevitably led to the windows being made smaller. An octagon supported by eight columns replaced the original choir and formed the largest domed structure on the left Lower Rhine . Gas lamps and heating installations were also added to the church.

Pastor Knorr, who took over the community after Morenhofen’s death in 1927, had to deal with the Gestapo at an early age . During the Second World War , his health continued to deteriorate, so that in 1940 he had to submit a pension application. He remained a member of the parish until his death on November 8, 1949.

His successor from 1941, Pastor Wilhelm Müller, saw the church badly damaged by air raids. When the US Army invaded in 1945, he got them to help rebuild the Church. This repair work dragged on into the 1950s and, thanks to generous donations, also led to new acquisitions. A new organ and a slate cladding of the roof are just two examples. The most important innovation was the church window, designed by Ernst Jansen-Winkeln .

In the 1960s, the sexton's apartment and the youth home on Grottenweg were completed. The pastor Wilhelm Müller died shortly afterwards and the parish was taken over by Aloys Keuchel. He earned the kindergarten on Mürrigerstrasse.

On November 25, 1973 Provost Kauff introduced Pastor Josef Düppengießer into his office. This focused on the social needs of its community members. But the church expansion was also pushed ahead. New benches and a new altar were purchased, in which the relics of St. Ursula and St. Engelbert were walled in. In a solemn ordination, the altar of Auxiliary Bishop Gerd Dicke was consecrated to the "Immaculate Conception".

In 1980 the “Paplerhaus” on Stationsweg became the property of the parish. After a renovation, it was used as an adult education center.

For safety reasons, the church in need of renovation had to be closed on September 17, 2004, as there was an acute risk of collapse. A tent church was used as a transitional phase until the church could be reopened for normal use in summer 2005. Just two years later, in summer 2007, the completion of the roof renovation was announced. The renovation was paid for from donations and sales. For example, the Paplerhaus was sold, which was renovated, expanded and turned into business premises by the new owner.
